In recent years, there’s been a growing trend for organizations that were born in the cloud to build their own on-premises infrastructure.

This might seem counterintuitive, given the relative ease and lack of IT needs that are in the public cloud’s favor. But the fact of the matter is that for organizations that reach a certain size, going on-premises often makes the most sense.

Here are three reasons why:

1. Cost

One major expense incurred from the public cloud is access — the need to tap into your data whenever you want.

Once an organization reaches a certain scale, however, they can hit a tipping point, making it more expensive to continually pay a cloud provider than to invest in their own infrastructure.

Yes, going on-premises comes with its own substantial cost, such as IT, hardware, and maintenance. But depending on an organization’s size and needs, the math can work out for an on-premises solution.

2. Compliance & security

There can be other reasons for going on-premises.

Organizations starting to look at an IPO, for instance, may want to build their own infrastructure to help with SOX compliance.

Another example would be an organization looking for the peace of mind of multiple redundancies and a dual vendor strategy so they know that even if a disaster strikes, they have options to retrieve their data.

3. Turnkey service
