Rancher 2.3 Brings Kubernetes Benefits to Microsoft Windows Applications

Last month, a release on Business Wire caught our eye. Here’s how it starts, emphasis ours:

Rancher Labs, creators of the industry’s most widely adopted Kubernetes management platform, today announced the general availability of Rancher 2.3. The latest release of their flagship product includes support for Windows containers, integration of Istio service mesh, and new cluster templates that provide enhanced security for large scale deployments of Kubernetes.

As longtime supporters of Rancher, this was exciting news. Creating general availability with Windows—and being the first to do it is a huge milestone for the company and development as a whole.

With this addition, you can now run Windows workloads with confidence, and integration of Istio service mesh brings with it built-in support for tools like Kiali dashboards, Jaeger, and Prometheus and Grafana.

There’s also the added level of security for Kubernetes—security that is both innovative and robust. This is especially crucial for organizations that are running multiple clusters at a time.

Hence the introduction of Rancher 2.3’s cluster templates. According to the release,

cluster templates help organizations reduce risk by enabling them to enforce consistent cluster configurations across their entire infrastructure.

So, what do cluster templates unlock for organizations with major security concerns? Two things:

  1. Confidence saving, creating, and even reusing Kubernetes configurations across multiple cluster deployments due to rigorous testing
  2. No more improper configurations through strict enforcement, as these can lead to high-risk security issues over time

Rancher was already one of our go-to services, but with 2.3 and its Kubernetes support, it’s better than ever. Being able to control all your clusters across managed Kubernetes, public cloud IaaS, and in your own data center in mixed Linux and Windows workloads is a definite game-changer.
