Gratitude and Growth: Lessons Learned Over 30 Years

blog4-featured-trust-light

Gratitude is easy when business is going well. The real test is whether you can hold onto it when things aren’t going as planned.

After three decades in technology, I’ve learned something simple: gratitude isn’t a closing paragraph. It’s an operating stance. It changes how you interpret setbacks, how you treat people, and how you decide what matters when pressure shows up.

It’s also one of the most practical tools we have for getting better.

Redapt is 30 years old. That milestone exists because customers trusted us early, employees stayed through uncertainty, and partners believed we could scale and execute.

We founded Redapt in our midtwenties. We were building a brand while asking people to trust us with something that mattered more than a purchase order: their reputations and careers. That isn’t something you earn once. You earn it again in every interaction.

The same is true inside the company. Early-stage growth brings ambiguity. Roles aren’t always clearly defined. Economic cycles test confidence. People who stay through those seasons aren’t “resources.” They’re builders.

And partners who grow alongside you aren’t just channels. They’re part of the ecosystem that makes outcomes possible—especially when the work is complex, and the stakes are high.

Gratitude is not sentiment. It’s discipline.

Here’s the mindset shift I want future Redapt leaders to protect:

Gratitude is powerful when applied under stress.

When something goes sideways, you can zoom in, assign blame, and tighten control. Or you can step back, see the bigger picture, and say one word that changes the next decision:

Good.

Not “good” as denial. “Good” as a refusal to waste the moment.

Good. This is information.
Good. This is teaching us something.
Good. Now we can improve the system.

That’s what gratitude does when it’s real. It turns negative results into learning without turning people into targets.

Trust is not a right. It’s a privilege that is earned in each moment.

It is not a right to do business with customers. It’s a privilege. And it is earned in each moment we get to interact with one another—customers, teammates, and partners.

That mindset changes behavior. It moves you away from entitlement and toward responsibility. It reminds you that people aren’t buying a deliverable. They’re betting that you will show character when things aren’t perfect.

character shows up in how you recover

Customers want perfection. That’s still the goal. But when things don’t go exactly as planned, that’s when values become visible.

That’s when accountability matters.
That’s when followthrough matters.
That’s when the quality of conversations matters.

Anyone can sound confident when the plan is working. The best teams stay clear, direct, and honest when it’s not. They do what’s right and what’s necessary to deliver on promises—without excuses and without drama.

One lesson from high school can become a long-term differentiator.

Before we started Redapt, my brother and I learned a valuable lesson while working at Nordstrom in high school: world-class customer service creates lifetime customers.

That could have been “just a job.” Instead, it became the foundation for how we operate. We applied that approach to an industry that didn’t typically work that way. The result wasn’t just happier customers. It was customers who wanted to keep building with us—and who asked us to expand our offerings because the relationship felt different.

Gratitude isn’t only retrospective. It’s directional.

We’re grateful for the effort of our team and partners in building trusted relationships that enable us to develop solutions. We’re grateful for our customers’ trust in our ability to deliver outcomes that improve their organizations and build their reputations and careers.

That gratitude shapes growth. It keeps expansion honest. It forces a question before every new capability, every new partnership, every new initiative:

Does this help us serve people better, or does it just make us bigger?

TAKEAWAYS

If you’re leading technology decisions in your organization, here are a few practical ways to apply this mindset.

  1. When something goes wrong, protect the learning before you protect the ego.
Ask: What is this teaching us about the system?
Then ask: What will we change so this is less likely next time?

  2. Treat trust as a daily renewal, not a historical achievement.
Assume nothing. Earn everything. Keep the conversations honest, especially when the news is hard.

  3. Measure growth by outcomes and reputations, not only revenue.
The best partnerships create a win for the organization and for the people inside it who made the decision.

If you’re dealing with a highstakes decision—or a situation that isn’t going as planned—and you want a partner who will stay accountable, clear, and focused on outcomes, let’s work through it together. We’ll start with the problem, identify what the moment is teaching you, and build the path forward from there.
