What is Datacenter Modernization

Data center modernization is the process of upgrading a legacy data center's compute, storage, networking, and management systems so it can support today's workloads. New avenues such as cloud-native applications, AI, and real-time processing all require a stronger and more modern datacenter.

Datacenter modernization replaces hardware-dependent, manually managed infrastructure with software-defined, automated systems that span on-premises, private cloud, public cloud, and edge environments as one connected whole.

What Involves Data Center Modernization?

Data center modernization transforms an existing data center's infrastructure such as servers, storage arrays, network fabric, power and cooling systems, and software into an environment that is more agile, efficient, and secure. Rather than replacing each piece of your hardware, modernization treats your architecture as a coordinated whole and reduces costs, supports specific AI initiatives or helps you meet data residency requirements. 

It's important to distinguish modernization from simpler hardware refreshes. Rather than swapping in newer drives or servers, modernization rearchitects how computing, storage, and networking are provisioned and managed. This can involve moving from physical and manually configured systems to ones that are defined by software and provisioned by automated policies. 

Why Does Data Center Modernization Matter?

Three market and IT forces are creating urgency for many modernization projects.

The first is that AI and high-performance computing demands more power and density that legacy facilities were built for. If you're trying to implement projects that require high-performance computing, you'll quickly run into infrastructure constraints and bottlenecks. Facilities built even five to ten years ago weren't designed for the density required today.

The second is that legacy systems can consume your IT budget. For instance, a large share of enterprise IT spend (as much as 60%) is often allocated to maintaining older systems. This extinguishes innovation and causes wasteful spend as the cost for maintaining the status quo increases each year.

Finally, hybrid and multi-cloud operations are now the default. If your organization hasn't planned for that, it will leave you with fragmented IT management and potentially inconsistent security policies. Modernization is meant to solve all three of these major issues.

How to Approach a Modernization

  • Assess the Current Environment: Identify technical debt, unsupported systems, and compliance gaps before making any purchasing decisions. 
  • Set Specific, Measurable Goals: Goals such as "Reduce Infrastructure Costs by X%" or "Support a Specific AI Use Case" gives the project a concrete shape to measure against.
  • Decide What Belongs Where: Not every workload should move to the cloud, and not every workload should stay on-premises. The decision should be made per workload, based on performance, cost, and compliance needs. 
  • Prioritize by Value: A phased plan that tackles the highest-impact workloads first reduces the risk of disruption. 
  • Test Before Going Live: Validate performance, security, and reliability against your original design goals before cutting over. 
  • Treat It As Ongoing: Modernization doesn't end at deployment. It will require continuous monitoring, patching, and lifecycle management as workloads and technology keep evolving.

Is data center modernization the same as digital transformation?

No. Digital transformation is the broader business shift toward digital processes and customer experiences. Data center modernization is the infrastructure layer underneath it. The compute, storage, and networking foundation that makes digital transformation technically possible.

How long does a data center modernization project take?

There's no fixed timeline, because modernization is designed to be ongoing rather than a one-time project. Most organizations run it as a phased, multi-year roadmap, prioritizing the highest-value workloads first rather than attempting a single "big bang" migration.

Does modernization mean moving everything to the cloud?

No. Modernization is about matching each workload to the right environment. Some workloads move to public cloud, some stay on-premises for performance or compliance reasons, and many organizations use colocation for high-density AI workloads their own facilities can't support.

What's the difference between data center modernization and a hardware refresh?

A hardware refresh replaces aging equipment with newer versions of the same thing. Modernization goes further, restructuring how infrastructure is managed. This is typically shifting from manually configured, hardware-dependent systems to software-defined infrastructure that can be provisioned and scaled through policy and automation.
